Frequently Asked Questions
Please read our FAQs for answers to our most frequently asked questions!
When was Tails of the North founded, and by who?
Tails of the North Inc. was founded in 2022 by a dog-loving mother and daughter team – Cathie and Fran. Both had been involved in dog rescue for years before finally deciding that the best way to help dogs in need was to open a rescue of their own. Along with Cathie and Fran, a wonderful and talented team of Board of Directors and volunteers, with ample years of rescue experience, joined forces to form Tails of the North Inc.
Does Tails of the North accept donations?
We do accept donations. All donations received go directly towards the care of our dogs, which includes their rescue, rehabilitation, and medical needs.
Where do the dogs come from?
Tails of the North Inc. receives foster animals from shelters, some in Niagara and others in the USA and international, that lack placement resources locally.
Do the pets that you foster have a time limit?
There is no time limit for how long a dog stays in one of our foster homes. The dogs will be with us until they are adopted.
Why do you not have a physical location?
Foster homes play a pivotal role in our success. We are able to keep our costs down by using vetted fosters in replace of a shelter local.
Is there an adoption application to fill out?
Yes! If you are interested in adopting a dog through Tails of the North Inc., please fill out the dog adoption application form. An adoption coordinator will reach out to begin the interview process to ensure that each dog adopted will be compatible with their new owner.
How long will the adoption process take?
The full process, including submitting the application form, meeting the new dog and interviews can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on a variety of factors. Please contact us to learn more about what to expect from the adoption process.
How can I prepare for the adoption process?
Please contact your vet to authorize them to speak with Tails of the North. Please let your personal references know that you have applied to adopt a dog with us and that someone from Tails of the North Inc. will be reaching out to them. Doggy proof your home – we will be completing a home inspection prior to approval.
Can I bring my current pets to meet a dog I’m considering adopting?
Our adoptable dogs should meet all members of your family before the adoption process is finalized to ensure compatibility.
We will schedule a meeting between your current pet and new dog during the adoption process to ensure they get along well.
What if my new dog gets sick?
Once the adoption process is finalized, you will be responsible for all medical bills and decisions regarding your dog.
What if I am no longer able to care for my adopted dog?
Our hope is that all homes are a forever home, however we understand that circumstances can change, and that sometimes it just is not the right fit. Whether you discover this two days after the adoption, or five years after the adoption, we will always welcome our dogs back with open arms. Their well-being is our main priority!
